Home for the Mentally Challenged

It all Started on 15th Aug 1983 when Fr. A.S. Antonysamy happened to see a mentally challenged person in Thirukoilur bus stand picking up some food from one of the waste paper baskets. He took him, brought him and placed him in a humble cottage at Ousteri. This is how the home for the mentally challenged took shape. PMSSS decided it would be a noble service if these people are taken care of.
Hence, PMSSS setup a committee comprising of religious heads, eminent psychiatrist from hospitals and the public for the rehabilitation of the affected by founding a Home for such people and it has been named as Fraternal Life Service Home for Mental ill.
It is situated in a sprawling area of 27 acres on the shores of Ousteri lake. Initially it was started with 10 patients. FLSH is a kind of transit home where the mentally challenged are admitted, given treatment in Pondicherry General Hospital and Jipmer Hospital, periodically checked by specialists and taken care of, free of cost. FLSH is the only centre available within the district of Pondicherry, Karaikal, Cuddalore and Villupuram Districts for the rehabilitation of such people. The home provides treatment to mentally ill irrespective of caste or creed. The objective for establishing such a home is to render medical care, love and concern for the mentally affected people.

The Home was constructed in the land leased by the HomePondicherry Archdiocese to PMSSS, with the support of Roskob Foundation USA during the year 2002. It has 9 rooms and we are able to accommodate and manage around 30 inmates both male and female. In recent times, there is a hike in the admission of patients especially during the summer time. Since there are no rooms to accommodate more patients who are in need of support and medical treatment, there is a need for the construction of one more block to accommodate more number of patients. On an average there are 25 patients in the home.

The rooms are not spacious enough to accommodate 25 patients. Male and female patients need to be kept in separate blocks.

In order to expand the services of the FLSH to more needy and neglected poor mentally ill, it was proposed to construct first floor to the existing FLSH building at Ousteri.
Caritas Austria was kind enough to approve the proposed project for a value of Rs. 29,10,000 (Euro 46396.68).
